According to the latest research from Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), compared with cigarettes, e-cigarettes are less harmful to the oral health of smokers, and may be less likely to cause periodontal-related oral diseases. The research was completed by the research group of Associate Professor Su Le, School of Bioengineering, Qilu University of Technology, and published in the SCI journal “ACS Omega” of the American Chemical Society.
Using cell culture and animal models, the research group compared the effects of cigarette smoke and e-cigarette aerosol on human gingival epithelial cells and mouse periodontal tissue. It was found that the activity of human gingival epithelial cells exposed to cigarette smoke was significantly reduced, while e-cigarette aerosol had no significant effect on cell activity. In addition, cigarette smoke can also induce inflammation and bone resorption in the periodontal tissue of mice, resulting in damage to the periodontal tissue, while e-cigarette aerosol has no such effect.
The research group believes that nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and other components contained in electronic cigarette aerosol are much less harmful to oral health than tar, carbon monoxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other harmful substances contained in cigarette smoke. Therefore, e-cigarettes may serve as an alternative to help people who want to quit smoking reduce their dependence on cigarettes while protecting their oral health.
