According to foreign reports, the European Independent Vaping Alliance (IEVA) stated that 700,000 people in the EU die from smoking every year, and one in every two smokers dies 14 years early. Dahlmann also said that variety in flavors is one of the most important reasons why smokers switch to vaping and why vapers quit smoking. He warned that a ban on flavors would remove one of the main advantages of e-cigarettes over tobacco cigarettes – improved taste.
The European Parliament recently recognized e-cigarettes as a tool to help some smokers quit and plans to do more to assess the risks of vaping in relation to smoking in the future. IEVA calls on the EU to take an evidence-based approach rather than hinder harm reduction efforts by banning most products on the market today.
