A quarter of Canadian high school students have used e-cigarettes, some of which contain nicotine, in the past month, according to a new study published in the journal Children. The data has drawn attention from experts and health authorities, who have called for more to be done to prevent teenage addiction to e-cigarettes.
The data for the study are based on the 2019 Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Survey (CSTADS), which involved 38,299 Canadian high school students in grades 9 to 12. The researchers found that 26 percent of high school students had vaped in the past month, and 12 percent of them reported vaping only nicotine-containing e-cigarettes. The researchers also found that students who used other alcoholic marijuana products were associated with students who used nicotine- and non-nicotine-containing e-cigarettes.
By age, 10th and 11th graders vaped more nicotine-containing e-cigarettes than 9th graders, but 9th graders vaped more nicotine-containing e-cigarettes than 11th and 12th graders . Understanding different characteristics of vaping youth, such as age or gender, could help policymakers implement more targeted interventions, the researchers said.
Experts pointed out that taste is one of the important factors for teenagers to smoke e-cigarettes, and flavors such as fruits, desserts, and mint are very attractive to children. They recommend that the federal government take immediate action to ban flavored e-cigarettes to make vaping products less attractive to young people. At present, Canada has established new regulations on the nicotine content allowed in e-cigarettes, setting the maximum concentration of nicotine at 20 mg per milliliter from July 2021.
