The latest research from the Global Status Report on Tobacco Harm Reduction (GSTHR) shows that the number of e-cigarette users worldwide will reach 82 million in 2021, a 20% increase from 2020. Research group KAC says e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to smoking and can help smokers wean themselves from cigarettes.

An e-cigarette is a device that simulates the process of smoking, by heating a liquid containing nicotine and other chemicals to create a vapor. The KAC said e-cigarettes are much safer than cigarettes and reduce the risk of inhaling harmful substances. “Smoking kills 8 million people each year. The increase in e-cigarette use is therefore a very positive step towards reducing the harm caused by cigarettes and accelerating cessation, which most people eventually quit completely,” they wrote.

However, not all countries support e-cigarettes as a harm reduction tool. GSTHR figures show that 36 countries have banned e-cigarettes, while 84 countries have gaps in the regulation or legislation of e-cigarettes. Millions of smokers who want to switch to safer e-cigarettes could be forced to buy unsafe products on the black market due to bans or a lack of product regulation, the KAC noted.

KAC calls on more countries to refer to the practices of countries such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand, actively disseminate information on the harm reduction of e-cigarettes, and provide more choices and support for those who want to quit smoking.
