Veolia launches e-cigarette recycling service in UK
To address the safe disposal and recycling of the 3 million e-cigarettes discarded every week in the UK, resource management company Veolia has launched a nationwide e-cigarette collection service.
The service facilitates the collection and transportation of e-cigarette products from retailers to recycling facilities for the extraction of valuable materials, including lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese. These materials could be used to make new batteries or other products, reducing demand for raw materials and reducing carbon emissions.
To safely store and transport these e-cigarettes containing lithium-ion batteries, Veolia will provide retailers with individual containers filled with vermiculite. Vermiculite is a mineral that reduces the risk of battery fires.
E-cigarette retailer Totally Wicked has joined the scheme, equipping each of its 154 stores with a drop-off point for consumers to drop off their used e-cigarettes for recycling. These drop-off points accept any brand and type of disposable and rechargeable e-cigarettes or e-cigarettes.
Donald Macphail, chief operating officer of Veolia’s UK disposal business, said: “Two e-cigarettes are thrown away every second. Although they are called disposable, they can and should be recycled.
