Recently, Dr. Kenneth E. Warner, professor emeritus of the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, stated in an article that there is sufficient evidence to support the use of e-cigarettes as an aid to smoking cessation in adults.
An e-cigarette is a handheld, battery-powered device that heats a liquid containing propylene glycol and/or glycerin, flavoring compounds, and often nicotine, to produce an aerosol that users inhale or vape. Electronic cigarettes can simulate the feeling of smoking, but without harmful substances such as tar.
Dr Warner said: “E-cigarettes are not a panacea to end the damage caused by smoking, but they can contribute to this noble public health goal. For adults who want to quit smoking, e-cigarettes are an important, less harmful alternative to continuing to smoke.
Dr. Warner pointed out that a number of studies have shown that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than cigarettes, and can help smokers reduce nicotine dependence and increase the success rate of smoking cessation. He called on the government and society to conduct a scientific, objective and fair assessment of e-cigarettes to promote their application in the field of smoking cessation.
