Smoking rates among young people in Denmark have fallen, but use of smoke-free nicotine products has risen, according to new research from the Danish National Institute of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark. These products include snus, nicotine pouches and vaping devices, which are increasingly popular among 15- to 29-year-olds.
The study, conducted on behalf of the Danish Health Authority, surveyed the smoking habits of more than 4,000 adults between March and May 2021. The results showed that the proportion of young people who used smokeless nicotine products daily or regularly increased from 26.3% in 2020 to 35.1%, while the proportion of young people who smoked daily or regularly decreased from 20.1% to 19%.
Use of smokeless nicotine products has increased across all age groups, but is particularly pronounced among young people. Morten Grønbæk, a professor of public health at the University of Southern Denmark who co-led the study, said the trend is worrying because the products still pose health risks and can lead to nicotine addiction.
“We don’t know the extent of the long-term health effects of these smokeless nicotine products, but we do know they contain nicotine, which is a very addictive substance. We also don’t know if these products act as a springboard to smoking,” he said. Or whether it prevents those who want to quit from successfully quitting.”
He suggested that the government take steps to limit the sale and advertising of smoke-free nicotine products to protect young people from its temptations. He said: “We need to make young people aware that these products are not harmless alternatives, but risky items. We also need to let them know that if they want to quit nicotine, we can provide help and support. ”
