The Malaysian Substance Abuse Council (Masac) has recommended that only locally produced e-liquids in sealed glass bottles be allowed to be sold in the country in order to protect public health and safety. The Masac secretary-general said the use of airtight glass bottles minimizes the risk of adding harmful substances.
He also suggested raising the age limit for vaping from 18 to 21 to prevent underage exposure to vaping. E-cigarettes are not harmless or an effective way to quit smoking, he said.
According to The Star, Malaysia currently does not have unified regulations on the production, sale and use of e-cigarettes and e-liquid. Different state governments have different laws and regulations, leading to market confusion and lack of regulation.
The Malaysian Minister of Health has also stated that the government is considering enacting national laws to effectively control and manage e-cigarettes.
An e-cigarette is a device that simulates the process of smoking, by heating a liquid containing nicotine and other chemicals to create a vapor. E-cigarettes are very popular in Malaysia, especially among young people. According to a survey, there are about 1 million e-cigarette users in Malaysia.
