According to foreign reports, Martin Cullip, an international researcher at the Consumer Center of the Taxpayer Protection Union, wrote that the EU’s e-cigarette tax is bizarre and unreasonable, and questioned why some people are so keen to punish those who want to quit smoking.
Cullip noted that the European Commission (EC) recently proposed a new bill to bring new types of nicotine products, such as heated tobacco products and vapor products, into the EU Tobacco Excise Directive. This means that e-cigarettes and heated cigarettes will face excise duties as high as 40% and 55%.
Cullip believes that this proposal is a departure from the principle of harm reduction, because electronic cigarettes and heated cigarettes are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes. He noted that high taxes on these products harm public health by discouraging smokers from switching to safer alternatives.
Cullip also criticized the European Commission for its prejudice and ignorance of vaping, as well as its disrespect and discrimination against smokers. He called on the European Commission to reconsider its legislative proposals before causing more harm.
