Cigarette consumption among Danish young people has declined, but use of nicotine products has increased, The Local Denmark reported.

Snuff, nicotine pouches and vaping devices are growing in popularity among young Danes, with 35.1% of 15- to 29-year-olds using these products daily or regularly, up from 26.3% in 2020.

Cigarette use fell from 20.1 percent to 19 percent, while use of smokeless nicotine products rose from 9.1 percent to 12.9 percent, according to a study by the Danish National Institute of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark on behalf of the Danish Health Authority.

「We also found that new products in particular, such as vaping devices and smokeless nicotine products, seem to be particularly popular among very young people,」 said Nanna Jarlstrup, one of the report’s researchers. 「That’s certainly worrying.」

「Unfortunately, we are also seeing an increase in the use of some illicit products. For example, the new disposable vape Puff Bars,」 Jarlstrup said.

「It’s not legal to sell them in Denmark, but we can see that young people can use them because they use them,」 she said.

While fewer 18- to 24-year-olds smoked daily or occasionally, 15- to 17-year-olds increased compared to 2020.

Denmark has banned smoking in schools and further education time, removed cigarettes from display in shops and raised the price of a pack of cigarettes to help reduce smoking.
