According to foreign reports, the Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) said that taste is not the reason why young people vape, and the real problem is the lack of enforcement against illegal trade and individuals buying goods for minors.
The CVA is an organization representing the Canadian vaping industry that promotes vaping as an alternative that benefits public health. In a recent statement, the CVA pushed back on claims by some health advocates that flavored e-cigarettes are the main cause of the increase in teen vaping.
The CVA notes that surveys consistently find that young people vape primarily for curiosity, nicotine, and to cope with stress and anxiety. Also, there is no implementation data to support the effectiveness of flavor bans in reducing youth vaping rates. Any data suggesting that flavor bans might work is based entirely on theoretical investigations.
The CVA also highlighted the direct correlation between e-cigarette adoption and the dramatic decline in smoking. From 2015 to 2020, the smoking rate among Canadians over the age of 15 dropped from 13 per cent to 10 per cent, according to Health Canada. Over the same period, e-cigarette adoption rose from 9 percent to 14 percent.
Darryl Tempest, government relations adviser to the CVA council, said the CVA stood by its position that taste was not the reason young people vaped. The problem is the sale of vaping products to minors through the black market and straw sales. The industry has taken a proactive approach, enforcing strict age verification measures for its members and actively working with law enforcement to prevent such sales.
Tempest also said the CVA welcomes meaningful direct dialogue with health organizations to develop common-sense policies that protect youth and the health outcomes of millions of Canadian smokers. He said he would contact all health advocacy groups and invite them to form a task force. Their intent is to work together to address these complex issues and find practical solutions.
Tempest also said that CVA firmly believes that policy must be evidence-based and consider the interests of all stakeholders. He said the CVA encourages health organizations to work with industry leaders and regulators to find common-sense policies that protect our youth while supporting the health outcomes of adults battling addiction. He said the CVA remains committed to engaging in meaningful conversations and finding solutions that work for all Canadians.
