The proportion of children in the UK who tried e-cigarettes increased by 50% last year, new figures show. Figures from the UK show that the proportion of 11- to 17-year-olds who have tried e-cigarettes has risen from 7.7% last year to 11.6% this year.

The proportion of children who were asked whether they had tried vaping once or twice doubled in nine years, from 5.6 percent in 2014 to 11.6 percent this year. Disposable e-cigarettes appear to be the preferred e-cigarettes of young people when asked what they use, with most purchases coming from small street shops.

Experts have previously warned about how a new generation of disposable e-cigarettes – known as isk vapes – which contain nicotine, are flooding the market. The latest survey bears this out, with Isk Vape being the most popular brand of disposables among children who vape.

The latest YouGov survey of 2,656 teens was conducted for the Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) in March and April. It will be presented as part of the government’s call for evidence to take steps to reduce the number of children exposed to vaping, while ensuring adults who want to quit can still use vaping.

Health and Social Care Minister Neil O’Brien set out in a speech at Policy Exchange the steps the government will take to reduce smoking rates and tackle underage vaping. “If your business plan relies on getting kids addicted to nicotine, we’re coming to you,” he said.

He also announced a new illegal vaping enforcement unit – backed by £3m – to remove illegal products from shelves and stop them crossing borders. “We will develop guidelines to help build compliance. We will remove illegal products from our shelves and across our borders, and we will do more testing to ensure compliance with our rules,” he said.

However, Ash said the evidence so far does not support the fears that vaping will cause a new generation to become addicted to nicotine. It said data showed that of the 20.5 per cent of young people who had ever vaped, the majority had only vaped once or twice, or had vaped, or had vaped less than once a week.

Ann McNeill, professor of tobacco addiction at King’s College London, said the data showed that too many adults and children who smoked thought vaping was as harmful as or equal to smoking. “These misconceptions may encourage children to believe they can also smoke like vaping, and discourage adults who smoke but have never vaped from accepting the government’s ‘quit-for-smoking’ offer (vaping vaping instead of cigarettes).”
