Representatives of the Montgomery, Alabama House of Representatives have approved a bill to regulate the use of e-cigarettes, according to foreign reports. The bill makes it illegal for retailers to sell all vaping products to anyone under the age of 21. It also expands the definition of ENDS to include any product that delivers a substance other than tobacco.
The bill, HB273, was introduced by Democratic Rep. Barbara Drummond to protect teens from the dangers of vaping. Drummond said she introduced the bill because she saw her grandson and his friends vaping. She said she was concerned that vaping could lead to nicotine addiction in teens and could increase their risk of switching to traditional cigarettes or other drugs.
The bill also requires retailers to check customers’ IDs when selling vaping products and to keep all vaping products behind a counter or locked away. In addition, the bill prohibits the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes in vehicles carrying children under the age of 14, and offenders will be fined $100.
The bill was signed by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and will take effect on January 1, 2022. In signing the bill, Ivey said she supports protecting Alabama’s youth from bad habits and health problems.
